Southern Spain is filled with amazing gateways to the past and none more spectacular than Andalucia’s capital of Sevilla. As one of our favorite cities in Europe Sevilla offered us countless hours of exciting exploration.

The city is a fascinating and eclectic mix of Gothic, Mudéjar, Baroque, and modern architecture; examples of each style can be found around every corner, within every plaza.

Glacier hiking offers a more adventurous spin on traditional hiking and can be done on every continent except for Australia. Whether you love nature, a physical challenge, or simply being outdoors, glacier hiking is a great way to feed your sense of adventure.

The sheer scale, beauty, and uniqueness of glaciers make the experience of hiking on them unforgettable. It’s an activity that often takes you out of your comfort zone and can provide a sense of accomplishment. Glacier hiking usually involves using specialised equipment and often requires exhilarating transport to reach them such scenic helicopter rides.

So now that I’ve piqued your interest, you may be asking where to start searching for glacier hiking experiences. My answer would be to start in New Zealand. While Australia may not have any glaciers, its neighbour has numerous that are “Sweet as, bru!”

One of my recent adventures was to the dynamic metropolis of Seoul in South Korea — a bustling city that not only holds a strong presence in Asia but also in the rest of the world. To date, this influence is largely due to Seoul’s cutting-edge technology, a strong economy, and vibrant culture (I’m sure that a majority of you have encountered K-pop, K-dramas, Korean cosmetics, and Korean food among many others at least once in your life!)

Curious travelers will spend days and hours keeping busy with all the things to do in Granada, Spain.

Granada is best known as the home of the Alhambra, one of the most famous fortresses/palaces in the world. However, there is a lot more to this fascinating city than royal palaces.

Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It sits at the confluence of four rivers, the Darro, the Genil, the Monachil, and the Beiro. It can be easily visited via bus from Malaga or Seville. This makes it a perfect day (or overnight) trip for anyone staying in those two cities as they explore Andalucia.

Florence was one of my favorite cities because of the architecture and natural beauty— the sun setting over the Arno River is something you can’t soon forget.

Rome is one of the most iconic and most traveled cities in Europe and you could spend days getting lost in this magnificent destination. I’ve managed to travel to all 7 continents now, and from all of my adventures, one of the countries that I will never get tired of revisiting multiple times would be Japan! (Japan Itinerary)

As a timeless destination, I am forever enamored by Japan’s ancient traditions that are perfectly fused with its vibrant modernity. Not to mention the lush nature and exquisite cuisine that it has and I’m sure that I’ll still barely ‘scratch the surface‘ even if I spend my life exploring it in its entirety.

With that said, it does seem daunting to whip up a Japan itinerary — but then again, not really! The country may be vast but it’s totally possible to make the most of it with whatever time you have.

When I first visited the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana in 2013, I wrote this about the city:
“Ljubljana is still relatively undiscovered as a major tourist destination. I doubt it will remain that way for long, though, so go to this place, and go now.”

Ljubljana is a fantastic city; one of my favorite capital cities in all of Europe, in fact (and yes, I’ve visited a lot of them!). I assumed that social media and a growing number of global tourists would undoubtedly transform Ljubljana into a cringey, crowded hotspot before long...

Iceland is a magical place. It’s the land of sheep, northern lights, volcanoes with unpronounceable names (try saying “Eyjafjallajökull”), rugged landscapes, waterfalls, mountains, and natural hot springs. Its stunning, scenic landscape feels out of this world.

Iceland quickly became one of my favorite countries after my first visit. It’s such a beautiful island filled with warm, welcoming people and sweeping vistas you won’t find anywhere else in the world. I have relished every subsequent visit to the country.

However, Iceland is expensive.

Traveling here on a budget is difficult as Iceland is definitely not a cheap country (and the growing influx of tourists is only increasing prices further).

Fortunately, it is possible to see a lot without going broke if you plan ahead. You won’t be living large if you’re here to backpack, but Iceland is worth the expense.

This travel guide to Iceland can help you plan your trip and see the sights without breaking the bank!

Turkey has been one of the most popular options for a holiday package over the last few years. However, you might not want to buy an expensive holiday package and instead pursue a road trip around Turkey on your own by creating your own Turkey itinerary.

Don’t worry if you don’t have much time, as I’ve seen the most popular spots in the country in just 10 days. Here I can tell you how you can do it yourself. I’ve done it a few times and let me tell you that it’s perfectly safe:

When booking your flights to Turkey you might consider getting to Cappadocia first and returning from Istanbul, instead of getting a return flight to Istanbul (alternatively booking a domestic flight separately). Arranging your trip this way can save you a lot of time on driving.

After falling in love with the exciting cities, beautiful landscapes, and delicious food of Portugal on my first trip there, I knew I needed to return to fix a major oversight from my first visit: not going to the Algarve.

The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, known for its white-washed fishing villages, dramatic sea cliffs, and gorgeous beaches. I didn't go on my first 10-day trip to Portugal because I wanted to make sure my time in Lisbon and Porto wasn't too rushed. But when I returned to Portugal this year, it was almost exclusively just so I could get a taste of the Algarve...

But did you know that people who live in the Nordics are consistently rated as some of the happiest in the entire world?

A Disclaimer on Visiting Afghanistan

This piece may seem outdated – or even reckless – in light of the Taliban’s consolidation of power. However, The Broke Backpacker believes it’s still important to pay homage to the Afghan people – a people vastly overlooked by the tourism industry.

Travel is about connecting human beings; it’s about breaking down the barriers of cultural division that separate us. The world is complex: it exists in many shades of grey.

The Broke Backpacker does not outright condone travel to Afghanistan in its current state, but neither will we stay silent on the beauty of the country for the sake of a terrorist takeover. Speak truth and love what deserves to be loved. The only thing it takes for evil to win is for good people to remain silent. And there are still many good people in Afghanistan that need a voice.

“Guys, how many days should I stay in Phnom Penh?”

…is a question we get asked a lot by our readers. And the answer is, it really depends on how much time you have on your hands to explore Cambodia. We came here expecting to stay for a few days but ended up staying for a few weeks!

Phnom Penh is the capital city and main transport hub of Cambodia. It's famous for the Killing Fields – a harrowing memorial dedicated to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. Most come to visit this then quickly move on to Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat. For us, we extended our trip here because we quickly fell in love with the bustling Cambodian capital. It's a very cool, modern, city, similar to Bangkok but on a much smaller scale.

At the end of the day, it depends on how long you've got for your Cambodia trip. We think you could easily spend a week (or two!) in Phnom Penh and never be bored. However, for those pushed for time, we think two days is more than enough to get a flavor of the city and learn about the country's sad history.

It’s no surprise that travelers fall in love with all aspects of this dynamic city.

Today, it is one of the most fascinating cultural destinations in the world, with eclectic art galleries, animated food markets, bustling nightlife, and grandiose historic buildings on tree-lined streets.

Located in the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba is home to white sandy beaches, crystalline waters, colorful fish, and picturesque ocean views. It’s one of the most popular tropical getaways in the world and a favorite of travelers who visit the Caribbean.

Here you’ll find pastel-colored Dutch houses juxtaposed against the natural island backdrop, transporting you to a tropical version of Amsterdam. Aruba’s not limited to the beaches and towns, though. Since it doesn’t get a ton of rain, the arid landscape has huge boulders and cactus forests scattered across it.

Like most other Caribbean islands, Aruba is expensive. This is a destination where honeymooners and luxury travelers go to relax so you’ll pay a premium for hotels, food, and activities in Aruba.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to visit Aruba on a budget though — it just takes some planning.

But, no matter your budget, this Aruba travel guide has all the practical information you need to help you plan your visit so you can make the most of your time in this island paradise!

Ice Caving in Iceland | snorkelling between 2 continental plates | snowmobiles | watefalls | glacier hike tour | Mýrdalsjökull glacier | Skaftafell National Park
Having been to every country in Europe, I can understand why people can get a little jaded with European travel, all the 49 countries can seem a little samey. A church here, a museum there. But then comes Iceland. Iceland, in my opinion, is the best country to travel through in all of Europe, with Malta probably coming second. Northern lights, snorkelling between two continental plates, waterfalls, snow-mobiles and one of my favourite activities I’ve ever done, ice caving in Iceland...

For me though the real highlight is getting to the ice caves. Once you enter the cave though – WOW. The most brilliant electric blue colours come shooting out from huge solid ice walls, the sun shines in through the mouth of the cave illuminating the entire place with colours you thought you could only see through an Instagram filter. It’s truly one of the most beautiful sites I’ve ever seen. Again, you don’t spend too long in the caves as there have been tragic occurrences of caves collapsing, so we probably got around fifteen minutes inside. And what a fifteen minutes it was.

After that, on our tour, it was a walk across a glacier back to the main road and my tour was over, checking your photos at night brings it all right back though. What a day. This is what you earn your money for. I hope you guys make it to Iceland, and if you have a choice, go in the Winter. Ice caves and Northern Lights will be two of your best travel experiences ever, you should add them to your travel bucket lists, I promise you that. Happy travels.

I love Dublin. While the city isn’t the prettiest in the world (and on a cloudy day it can feel downright gloomy), there is so much literary and cultural history here you can’t help but feel inspired as you explore. It’s a lively city brimming with traditional pubs, live music and dancing (so much Irish jigging), and a hearty, vibrant food scene.

While Dublin does have something for everyone, I think history buffs and late-night revelers will get the most out of the city. Some of the world’s most famous writers cut their teeth here and there is a sprawling pub scene that ensures you’re never far from your next pint.

Best of all, Dubliners are a friendly, inquisitive bunch always happy to show you a good time.

You just simply can’t go wrong with a few days in this city.

This budget travel guide to Dublin will help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your visit!

Beaming with natural beauty, tasty food, welcoming locals, and historical sites, Aomori has a little something for everyone — there are numerous things to do in Aomori to keep you busy.

Located at the northern tip of the main Honshu Island in Japan, the Aomori prefecture surprised and delighted us at every turn, and left us wanting more.

With easy transport options from the capital city of Tokyo and relatively untouched nature, it’s easy to see why Lonely Planet listed the Tohoku region as one of their “Best In Travel” destinations. The Tohoku region is comprised of 6 prefectures (which are similar to states or provinces): Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Yamagata. But, the capital city of the Aomori prefecture is also called Aomori. It’s a little bit confusing!
