In more chaotic times the Sapang Palay district of San Jose del Monte was infamous as a dumping ground for gangland and political corpses. Later, the government dumped urban squatters in the Sapang Palay. The squatters have since gained title to their plots and made solid livings for themselves. Today, the population of Sapang Palay is growing fast, as new business and housing developments are going up. Transport links remain poor, with the ever more crowded Quirino Highway the main route in and out. Transport west, to the other towns of Bulacan and the NLEX expressway, are obstructed by a limited number of narrow, high-traffic roads.
