Travelling the world may seem off limits to most new parents. However, it does not have to be that way. ‘Travel Mad Mum’ aims to inspire other parents with personal experience, factual information and top tips for travelling with little ones.

I always attempt to cover a range of topics such as backpacking with a baby, flying with a baby, flying with a toddler, travelling on maternity leave, babymoon travel, packing for a baby as well as destination based information relevant for family travel.

If you are looking for the best things to do in Galle, Sri Lanka, you have come to the right place! We are lucky enough to call Galle our home.

In December 2022, we randomly pinpointed Galle and have been playing tourist in our home town ever since. There are so many things to do in Galle. It is rich and diverse in landscape and culture.

Galle is one of 25 districts in Sri Lanka and is situated in the country’s southwest. It extends from Bentota, which is the most northerly part of the district, all the way to Ahangama in the south, which is known for its beautiful surfing spots.

When it comes to things to do in Galle, there are incredible temples, the most stunning coastline with palm trees galore and a river network teeming with wildlife, not to mention the fortress town which makes Galle so famous!

Many beautiful beaches throughout Galle have small surf towns with lovely communities, cafes & restaurants. Whilst others are still quite isolated and untouched. Throughout Galle, there are many villages where a true insight into the life of locals is easy to witness...

Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island is a hugely popular destination and rightly so. Highly accessible, the beautiful beaches and Thai hospitality is what makes it so famous and easy to travel to Koh Samui with kids.

It is more expensive to fly into Koh Samui in comparison to phuket, hence the ferry is very popular. We initially landed in Bangkok and took an internal flight. With over 1 million visitors a year, Koh Samui has all the amenities you could want when travelling with little ones.

On the whole, you could incorporate Koh Samui into a bigger Thailand itinerary. I visited in December with my husband and very nearly 2 year old son and tried out three different kinds of accommodation. Here is our guide to Koh Samui with kids in the usual play, sleep and eat format...

Visiting the Maldives with kids appeared to be quite a surprise to some of my followers on Instagram. It’s crazy how many people think the Maldives is predominately for couples on honeymoon.

There are tonnes and tonnes of fantastic resorts and hotels in the Maldives with kids club, not to mention many activities which are family-friendly.

Needless to say, it can be a trip which can work out quite costly, so for many, it is the perfect ending for a trip to nearby countries such as Sri Lanka or India.

When Florida comes to mind, a national park is usually the last place you think of! Most families visit Florida for the beaches and Disney.

However, every year more than one million tourists from all over the world visit the Everglades. In fact, families find tons of activities and things to see in the Everglades with kids.

The Everglades is one of the wonders of the world. With 1.5 million acres, it has been declared a World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve and Wetland of International Importance.

The National Park has nine points of entry and visitors have the chance to see the park by sea, tram, bicycle or on foot.

What makes this massive swamp in the southern part of Florida unique is it is home to hundreds of different species, both native and non-native. You never know what you might see!

After our last holiday when we were backpacking and constantly on the move, we decided our next trip would be somewhere beach side. We wanted to put little to no effort into planning for the complications that come with travelling with a toddler.

We started looking at all the things to do in Cyprus with kids and it checked all our boxes. Beautiful Cyprus hotels on the beach with kids clubs, entertainment, and pools with watersides, we knew it was going to be fun and relaxing for all of us.

Cyprus is the perfect destination wether your travelling with a baby, toddler or older children.

We started researching where to go in Cyprus and decided that Paphos as well as Ayia Napa seemed like the best places to visit in Cyprus with kids. So, we decided to spend a few days in each!

We ended up loving both and could have easily spent a full week in either.

The reason we visited the US was predominantly to see the national parks along the West Coast.

We were doing a road trip down highway 101 with detours for some of the fantastic parks and cities along the way. In honesty, we were trying to avoid the cities since they’re not so much our thing.

So when we spent time in Seattle with kids, we were completely taken by surprise when we enjoyed it so much. There were so many fun things to do in Seattle for kids!

We were visiting Dubai and felt we really couldn’t miss out on Abu Dhabi with kids. At only an hours drive from Dubai and direct flights from London to Abu Dhabi itself, this city of glitz and glam with stunning beaches is more than accessible.

Based on an island extending from the mainland into the Arabian Gulf, it’s no surprise the beaches are stunning. The skyline is dominated by skyscraper buildings with some unusual architectural designs.

Being the capital of the United Arab Emirates, it’s no doubt the city has some incredible landmarks such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Emirates Palace...

Taking a trip to Andorra has been on my list for as long as I can remember! A micro-country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain and France, not many people realise Andorra is an independent country.

Despite being in Europe and using Euro as the local currency, it is not part of the EU, meaning it’s a tax haven attractive to shopping enthusiasts.

However being adventurers at heart, we visited to explore the nature, take in the beautiful landscape and soak up the micro Catalonian culture of Andorra. Being in the Pyrenees the most obvious thing to do is, an Andorra ski holiday, incorporating all of the other amazing things to do along the way.

Bermuda with kids is an incredible destination where we spent 8 days exploring what’s on offer to families. We discovered as many child-friendly activities as possible to write this detailed guide on what to do in Bermuda with kids.

It’s one of my all time favourite family vacations, I have such fond memories of this tiny island, with such diverse landscape and unique experiences.

I was actually pregnant at the time of travelling to Bermuda, so I was incredibly happy that it’s a small island with low key walks, easy to reach attractions, without the crowds at popular tourist destinations.

We treated it as half a baby moon trip / half family trip. It doesn’t matter if your visiting Bermuda with baby, a toddler, or kids, this guide fits all.

It’s just a short flight for anyone living on the East Coast of the US and a 7.5 hr flight from the UK, British Airways fly direct regularly.

Bermuda is located a good way north of the Caribbean, so don’t expect tropical weather all year around! We visited Bermuda in January, the weather was sunny and warm, but still a little chilly for swimming some days. We definitely needed clothing layers...

We have been wanting to visit Jordan with our kids for a while now. The Middle East is so different from other places we’ve been with its vibrant unique culture and tantalising local delicacies, it’s an experience like no other!

From the red sandy desert of Wadi Rum, to the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea, there is a lot to see and do in Jordan (although I don’t recommend the Dead Sea with kids, more about that later).

Santa Teresa is a hip town on the west coast of Costa Rica’s, Puntarenas Province. Unlike neighbouring Nicaragua, the area has been welcoming tourists for many years, despite it being a hard to reach destination. The white sand beaches have perfectly formed waves (all year round) and palm trees stretch as far as the eyes can see. The rugged coast attracts surfers and beach lovers alike. Despite a steady flow of tourists and a huge expat community in the area, there are certain things that are ‘behind the times’ so to speak...

I found it incredible that the beach and all of the nature around Santa Teresa is so untouched! Wild beautiful beaches with palm trees and no commercial buildings overlooking them. We have friends living in the area, and like they said, the boutique hotels and independent businesses thrive in Santa Teresa.

We had initially planned to spend three days in Santa Teresa with kids but we ended up staying three weeks! I found it very easy to penetrate the community, so we felt at home, and our little one attended kindergarten as well as the school holiday kids camp. She was so happy, we decided to stay for longer. Besides from the kids camp, there was plenty to do and enjoy. Here is our play, eat and sleep guide to Santa Teresa with kids.

We’ve been to Portugal with kids twice now. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, its one of the most family-friendly countries in Europe, and somewhere I always recommend to people looking for a break. We’ve been twice now and had some of our best family holidays in Portugal!

On our first trip a couple of years ago, we focused on Central Portugal mixing a Lisbon city break with a relaxing cultural and beach trip to Sintra. Whereas on our most recent family vacation, we explored the Algarve on the southerly coast of the country!

Both visits were quite different and could be combined into a longer road trip around Portugal with kids. Renting a car could be an amazing way to explore on an extended trip, however, public transport is also quite good...

The Masai Mara is an infamous national reserve in Kenya that skims the Tanzanian border in the South West of the country. Best known for the great migration and traditional Masai villages, visiting the Mara is a once in a life time experience. I honestly found it life changing!

We had visited Nairobi with kids initially and felt we had got such an amazing experience seeing wildlife in the national park. Just when we thought our trip couldn’t get any better, Kenya kept blowing our mind!

It’s been ten years since I first visited New Zealand on a solo backpacking adventure. I thought it was a once in a life time opportunity.

Little did I know I would end up married to a New Zealander and return more than five times since that initial trip. The one place I like to return to time and time again, is Rotorua.

Though I haven’t had the chance to go tramping in New Zealand again, my New Zealand bucket list is always growing but Rotorua is my favourite destination. It’s such a diverse little place in terms of sites and experiences! I was really looking forward to returning to Rotorua with kids.

I can’t bare to skirt around the outside of a country and not go into it. Even if it is as small as San Marino! Completely land locked by Italy, I never heard of it when I was younger.

However, this tiny nation has been on my hit list for a while, since I have been trying to conquer Europe in its entirety.

Just two countries to go before I have visited them all. I must say, it’s not the easiest place in the world to get to. We had spent a couple of days in Venice and then backpacked down to Rome, so we decided we had to go, even if it was a three hour drive from our nearest passing point.

We spent twenty-four hours in San Marino and it definitely inspired us for all it had to offer. This took us by surprise as many locals on the other side of the border said it wasn’t worth the hassle. How wrong they were!

Amsterdam is not the first European City that pops to mind when you’re looking for a family friendly break. My main motive to visit Amsterdam with kids was to see the infamous tulip fields, however the more I researched, the more I realised it was going be such a fun weekend!

Although Amsterdam is best known for its liberal coffee shops, red light district and romantic canal tours, there is another side to it for families.

All you have to do is take one look around the street at the kids in Amsterdam, riding past in the front of their parents bikes and you’ll see it’s such a fabulous city for little ones.

Jimbaran was one of the first places we set foot in Bali three years ago. We made it to the beach for sunset and sat at a candle lit table with the waves just about washing under our table. Our little one was only ten months at the time when we visited Jimbaran with kids, and it was there our love affair with Bali began.

The incredible sunset and ambiance on the beach, it was a hook, line and sinker situation. Jimbaran is so different from other West Coast Bali towns. Its far more quiet than places like Seminyak. There are plenty of people on the beach, but not even an eighth of the amount in comparison. Thats probably why we loved it a lot more. We were so pleased to return to Jimbaran with kids, now that our girl is a bit older...

I have always loved small colonial towns. The buildings and architecture are so eye-catching with bright colors, crumbling paint, pretty town halls and bustling squares. We visited Antigua, Guatemala before visiting the city of Granada, Nicaragua. We absolutely loved Antigua so we weren’t sure if Granada could beat it.

My first impression was the town was beautiful. I was blown away by the variety of colors on the buildings. They are bold and striking, whereas I find, other colonial towns use pastilles. Secondly, it is so quiet! My expectation was to see tourists and locals alike filling the streets. I mean, there are so many things to do in Granada, Nicaragua but it seems tourism has dipped...

The truth is, I was looking for the swing off the end of the world in Banos, Ecuador with kids. You know, the one that was circulating all over Facebook? The video of people on a massive tree swing that literally goes out over the clouds, with a volcano backdrop? I hadn’t expected to find such incredible wonders of nature in our search.

A beautiful winding canyon, for miles, with lush green grass and gushing waterfalls around every corner. Based high in the Andes and at the gateway to the Amazon, I hadn’t realised Banos was so set up for tourists. There is so much infrastructure, from road trains, to zip lines across the canyon.
